During my one-month training at the Ethiopian Technical University, FDRE TVET Center, I had a great chance to learn practical skills. I am very thankful to Allah for this opportunity. I also want to thank the whole GSA Team, Mr. Gamal, Eng. Nasrudin, and Mr. Mayow for their hard work in helping us reach this university in Ethiopia. Their support and belief in me gave me the confidence to do my best in the training. I am very grateful for the new knowledge and skills I learned, and now I feel ready and proud to help and serve it to my nation, and the next generation, in Somalia.

The skill-based training at FDRE TVET – Ethiopian Technical University was very practical and valuable. During my time there, I focused on learning everything I could about how water supply systems and waste drainage/disposal systems work in buildings. This blog is about my own journey, the important lessons I learned, and the great environment that helped me improve my skills.

Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is a beautiful city full of history and culture. My time at FDRE TVET Institute was more than just learning from books; it was also about experiencing a new culture. The school is right in the center of the city, so I had the chance to see the local life, try a new language, and meet many friendly Ethiopian people. Everyone there welcomed me warmly and made me feel comfortable.

As a TVET Master Trainer, I received training using modern and high-quality workshop facilities. I got
the chance to practice, try out, and really do the work by myself. The following is list of those topics:

  • Installation and test of hot and cold water supply pipes
  • Installation of HDP, PPR and GI water supply pipes
  • Installation and testing procedures of waste drainage/disposal pipes
  • Installation and fitting of sanitary fixtures
  • Installation of fire water pipe and control system
  • Control valves and traps
  • Healthy and safety considerations in plumbing industry
  • Terminologies used in plumbing industries
  • General guidelines and codes in the plumbing industry
  • BoQ’s and BoM’s used in the plumbing industry

Plumbing tools and materials

One of the most special things about my time at Ethiopian Technical University was the very practical experience I received from the expert engineers there. The senior water engineers were skilled and knowledgeable, but more importantly, they were also dedicated to supporting me and helping me improve quickly. They made sure I understood what I was learning and guided me in every step, making
my hands-on training both complete and useful.

I want to give special thanks to Engr. Abraham, who went out of his way to teach me every important skill in the plumbing industry. He used a hands-on approach, making sure I knew exactly how to do every task. His advice and feedback were always helpful, especially when I made mistakes. Instead of just pointing out the errors, he would teach me how to get better in a way that encouraged me. I am really thankful for his patience and discipline. I also want to thank Engr. Dewit, who was not just a trainer, but also a good mentor, a brother, and a good friend. He made me feel welcome and always made time to answer my questions, both of them, I learned that being a good engineer is about more than just knowing the technical side; it’s also about having good manners, caring about others, and helping people grow.

Overall, spending a month at FDRE TVET Ethiopian Technical University was a life-changing experience. The support of the trainers, the well-structured lessons, the focus on safety, and the friendly environment have made me a better plumber and trainer.
